Security Benefit (SB) is seeking a Cloud Security Architect to join our Cybersecurity Team. SB fosters strong partnerships to provide insightful and customized retirement solutions for employers and individual investors nationwide. Through a broad advisor network and its nationally recognized money managers, SB provides mutual funds, annuities and retirement plans and programs. As an industry leader in service technology, SB affiliates also offer business processing and broker/dealer solutions tailored to the financial services marketplace. This position will work out of our corporate office in Topeka, KS working in a hybrid work environment or remote.

General Accountabilities:

The Cloud Security Architect leads the design and development of security controls and secure design for all Security Benefit cloud services (including Infrastructure, Platform, and Software as a Service (IaaS/PaaS/SaaS) solutions. The position serves as a central point of contact for cloud enterprise security for other teams in the organization. The position also evangelizes the transition of the organization to cloud-centric designs and modern development principles such as DevOps and Site Reliability Engineering. This role will report to the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO).

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support driving AWS cloud vision in all aspects ensuring all tools and implementation are appropriately secured;
  • Design and develop secure architectural solutions for existing and future SB cloud workloads;
  • Design and develop security monitoring solutions for existing and future SB cloud workloads;
  • Ensure cloud service designs follow standard frameworks such as the AWS Well-Architected Framework;
  • Assist with design and security of integrations for cloud services and on-premises services;
  • Assist in transitioning traditional services to more secure, cloud-native designs;
  • Consult with stakeholders on cloud platforms, including new platforms being considered for adoption;
  • Stay up to date on new cloud services and security offerings and investigate how they might benefit risk profile of the organization;
  • Document the security posture of cloud services;
  • Serve as a subject matter expert to the security team;
  • Assist with disaster recovery, digital forensics, and incident response processes;
  • Design automation solutions for security functions;
  • Participate in industry events and training.


  • A./B.S. in computer science, cybersecurity, or another relevant field required (equivalent cumulative industry experience also accepted);
  • 5+ years of experience managing, maintaining, and securing enterprise cloud security solutions;
  • Current professional security certifications or other professional designations such as CISSP or CISM;
  • AWS Cloud Solutions Architect certification within six months of start date or other similar AWS certification(s). Other certifications and training will be ongoing;
  • Experience with cloud development tools and languages such as CloudFormation, Terraform, python, YAML, JSON;
  • Experience with development practices such as git-based workflows;
  • Experience with orchestration and automation tools such as Chef, Ansible, or Puppet;
  • Experience working with REST APIs for service integrations and customization;
  • Experience designing cloud security controls for regulated financial organizations;
  • Ability to participate on an on-call rotation for after-hours reactions to cybersecurity incidents and alerts;
  • Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills;
  • Strong communication skills with ability to communicate effectively on technical and business issues.
